Skype was probably one of the most anticipated and much wanted applications for iPhone. While some of the all-in-one instant messengers like Nimbuzz do provide Skype connectivity, I always prefer an official application.

I installed Skype on my iPhone immediately it became available on the App Store. Unfortunately, the application crashes and shutsdown frequently. No, practically it's useless. I'm not sure whether it is my iPhone to blame or there are some problems with the application. Anyhow, it's really great to see Skype coming to iPhone and hopefully the developers will quickly fix whatever problems or bugs may be in the current release.

Download Skype for iPhone now! It's free of course.

It works great on mine! No crashes, or downtime whatsoever! I did read about 3G problems and not being able to use 3G to connect..
Don't give up hope just yet!

Is your phone jailbroken? If so you'll need the Cydia mobile substrate update.

Hello ;) This is because your iphone is most probably jailbroken, and this is the problem of hacking community - not the Skype Inc. Skype works for me flawlessly, I restored my iPhone 1 day before the Skype was out because I don't see much sense in jailbreaking anymore.

Well, we have several iPhones over here at our work and they all crash after a few minutes when running Skype. The iPhones here have different firmware and the latest firmware seems to work better but still with constant crashes of Skype. In principle it is indeed still useless for the iPhone. Really a pitty and I hope the updates to correct the bugs will come soon.

your iphone must be jailbroken - that's why it crashes

follow instructions here to fix it

Thank you for your comments. Yes, I'm using a jailbroken iPhone. However, Skype DOES crash on non-jailbroken iPhones as well. One way or another, despite my respect towards Skype, the application is still raw. In my opinion Skype was somewhat quick with the release. I'd rather test the application thoroughly before releasing it.

It crashes constantly on my non-jailbroken iphone as well. TO be more specific it seems to work fine if I am making a skype to phone call, but crashes when making a skype to skype call

This is not a problem with jailbroken iPhone only. I have skype on my iPhone (not jailbroken and nothing out of the ordinary on it, with only a couple of free third party apps on it) that works fine for couple of days, and then all of a sudden it starts crashing on starup.

The only remedy is to remove the app, and re-install it.

It then works for couple of days, and magically starts crashing again on startup after a couple of days.

I don't know if I can post my iPhone skype app crash logs anywhere, but it basically says that code has tried to access illegal memory location.

I GOT IT!!! Just remove the chat history of the person that causes Skype to crash. That solved it for me on my non-jailbroken iPhone.
