Free Repairs For Apple Products Damaged In Japan Quake

Apple users with Macs, displays, and iOS devices that were in a straight line hurt in the Japan earthquake and tsunami may be authorized for free maintenances. The suggestion, published on the Apple's Japanese website, ignores iPod classic, Nano and Shuffle, and only applies to consumers living in areas enclosed by the Ministry of Health's Disaster Relief Act.

Initially posted in March, Apple's message joins Softbank's offer to substitute lost iPhones registered to its network with new ones, and free calls to Japan from U.S. carriers, amongst others. Bearing in mind that water and other unintentional damage typically voids a device's warranty; you'll want to give Apple Care a call as soon as possible as the acceptance period only runs through June 30th.

Steve Jobs Has Ranked Third

Despite the fact of Apple being world’s most valuable brand in 2011, its CEO Steve Jobs has ranked third in a list of Engineering Heroes, behind Isambard Kingdom Brunel and James Dyson but ahead of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

The list of Engineering Heroes was chosen by around 900 engineering undergraduates in the UK who were surveyed by General Electric (GE).

Brunel's work on bridges, dockyards and railways made him the top choice among engineering students; with Dyson's vacuum cleaners - as well as support for engineering projects - put him in second.

Jobs takes credit for Apple products such as the Apple II and iPod.

Nikola Tesla came in fourth, ahead of Bill Gates. Frank Whittle, inventor of the first jet engine was next, with Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce and Thomas Edison completed the top 10 list.

Mark Elborne, President and CEO of GE UK said: "Our research shows that iconic figures – both historic and modern – continue to inspire a new generation of engineers. We continue to see the impact of these icons all around us today; and our research shows that we have a proud tradition of pioneers and innovators in this country, which should be celebrated.

"With the very significant environmental, energy and healthcare challenges we face today and will face in the future, it is critical that we continue to inspire young people into engineering and science, nurturing future generations of Brunels, Newtons and Edisons," he continued.

Apple is The World’s Most Valuable Brand!

The Apple brand is valued at $153.3 billion dollars, according to the just-released WPP 2011 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands, the definitive annual study of brand value. Apple’s brand value increased 84 percent last year, according to the study, which is produced by Millward Brown Optimor, a WPP company. The Top 100 overall increased by 17 percent to $2.4 trillion last year.

The Apple brand increased by 959 percent since 2006, when WPP launched the BrandZ Top 100 study. In culminating its remarkable ascent, Apple displaced Google as Number 1 in brand value worldwide. The Apple brand value today is roughly equivalent to the combined value of the Coca Cola and McDonald’s brands.

The BrandZ Top 100 study is based on WPP’s BrandZ database, which contains information from more than 2 million in-depth consumer interviews in 30 countries. This proprietary data is combined with rigorous analysis of financial performance. The brand value quantifies an intangible asset that confers irrefutable credibility as the Apple Corporation pursues its business strategies and innovative leadership.

The results also indicate how Apple and technology in general are reshaping our world, transforming both business practices and the lives of consumers:
  • One-third of the Top 100 Most Valuable Global brands are in technology.
  • Four of the Top 5 Most Valuable Global brands are in technology.
  • Facebook appeared for the first time among the Top 100 at Number 35.
  • Amazon surpassed Walmart as the world’s most valuable retail brand.

Apple To Patch Location Bugs

We have discussed the iPhone location tracking from both- customers’ and company’s points of view. It’s been said that Apple was tracking users’ locations for just one purpose and after accomplishing its goal, the “bug” was immediately fixed! (the picture on the right enlightens the objective)

Now some facts, it’s taken just seven days between that announcement and the appearance of iOS 4.3.3, while Apple said it would take a few weeks to issue an iOS update to fix a handful of bugs related to the storage of location data. A very good strategy to underpromise and overdeliver!

The iOS 4.3.3 addresses three bugs related to the database of location information on iOS devices that caused so much discussion and debates among users. Here is what iOS 4.3.3 brings up:

Reduces the amount of the cached location information to a week’s worth, rather than relying on a size limit;
It no longer backs up the cache to your Mac or PC via iTunes upon syncing, so the information isn’t available to anyone with access to your computer;
The cache is now deleted from the device when Location Services are disabled in iOS’s Settings app.

Apple has also declared plans to encrypt the location information on iOS devices itself in the next major update to the operating system, which apparently refers to iOS 5.

The iOS 4.3.3 update relates to the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS; iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch (both 3rd and 4th generations). The CDMA iPhone got a separate update today, in the form of iOS 4.2.8 which fixes the same location bugs, but leaves that device short of the other features of iOS 4.3.

It should be remarked that Apple has managed to solve the problem of all smartphones very efficiently by immediate response to customers’ problems. Let’s see what happens next and hope that other smartphone producers also manage to quiet the quiet crowd.
