Free calls with Skype on your iPhone/iPod and soon on iPad touch

The first official Skype iPhone app went live in March 2009 offering to customers VoIP calls for free – but only via Wi-Fi, join in Skype instant messaging sessions as well as conference calls and availability of SkypeOut credit via the iPhone web browser. Now Skype has released updated version of the same app enabling to make calls over 3G networks and works on iPad as well as on iPhone. App includes improved start-up time and an enhanced call quality indicator, which helps customers to choose the best moment to make calls.

Skype iPhone app helps you to reach your contacts anywhere in the world and without being restricted to the availability of Wi-Fi network. The service is available at great rates with Skype. You can call and text (SMS) phones with Pay As You Go credit or with a subscription you get unlimited calls² to landlines (and mobiles in some countries).

Moreover, Skype-to-Skype calling on 3G is free and to phones abroad on WiFi or 3G at low cost until at least the end of August 2010, after that there'll be a small monthly free.

Regarding Apple iPad, the consumers can use the Skype iPhone app, but it may cause some problems concerning interface and space usage as the app needs a lot of space in some cases. Unfortunately not all the iPhone apps run on iPad, but the developers started working on this stuff and soon iPad users can have the Skype app for iPad and it will hit the app store pretty soon.

In addition, Skype will release two new apps this summer – one for iPad and a new redesigned version for iPhone. There are also rumors that iPhone Skype app may feature video chat. This rumor might come true as the next iPhone 4G/HD has a front facing video camera for video chatting.

The application is available from the App Store and is compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch and the iPad. Skype requires the iPhone operating system version 3.0 or above.
