Why Did Head Of Retail John Browett And iOS VP Scott Forstall Leave Apple?

Shortly after announcing Q4 financial results, Apple has announced management changes to increase collaboration across hardware, software and services. The very first sentence of the press release reads that Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles, while Scott Forstal and John Browett will be leaving Apple next year. Scott Forstall will serve as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook in the interim, the report says.

Soon after the public announcement, Tim Cook has sent out a team-wide email thanking Forstall for his "many contributions to Apple over his career". Some sources managed to get the full text, which we provided below:

We are in one of the most prolific periods of innovation and new products in Apple’s history. The amazing products that we’ve introduced in September and October – iPhone 5, iOS6, iPad mini, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pro, iPod touch, iPod nano and many of our applications – could only have been created at Apple, and are the direct result of our relentless focus on tightly integrating world-class hardware, software and services.

Today, I am announcing changes that will encourage even more collaboration between our world-class hardware, software and services teams at all levels of our company. As part of these changes, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue, and Craig Federighi will be taking on more responsibilities. I am also announcing that Scott Forstall will be leaving Apple next year and will serve as an advisor to me during the interim. I want to thank Scott for all of his many contributions to Apple over his career…

…Additionally, John Browett is leaving Apple. Our search for a new head of Retail is already underway. In the meantime, the Retail team will report directly to me. Retail has an incredibly strong network of leaders at the store and regional level, and they will continue the excellent work they’ve done over the past decade to revolutionize retailing with unique, innovative services and a focus on the customer that is second to none. This phenomenal team of talented and dedicated people works their hearts out making our customers happy. They have our respect, our admiration and our undying support.

Please join me in congratulating everyone on their new roles.

I’d like to thank everyone for working so hard so that Apple can continue to make the world’s best products and delight our customers. I continue to believe that Apple has the most talented and most innovative people on the planet, and I feel privileged and inspired to be able to work with all of you.

With the reputable media representatives repeating the story, Forstall is widely suggested to have met his demise when he refused to put his name on the apology letter Apple released several weeks ago concerning the iOS 6 Maps. Despite the positive attitude expressed in the above e-mail, sources say Forstall had his enemies inside the executive ranks. The exact circumstances of Forstall's refusal are unclear, but not entirely unexpected - he’d been the one responsible for iOS 6 Maps, while we saw Tim Cook’s signature on the public apology letter about the inabilities of the service…

Apple Releases Q4 Results – 26.9 Million iPhones Sold!

Apple announced the financial results for its fiscal 2012 fourth quarter ended September 29, 2012 yesterday. After declaring the results, the board announced quarterly dividend of $2.65 per common share.

The company reports quarterly revenue of $36.0 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per diluted share. Gross margin was 40.0 percent compared to 40.3 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarter’s revenue. The press release published at Apple’s news section reads:

“The Company sold 26.9 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 58 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 14.0 million iPads during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.9 million Macs during the quarter, a 1 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 5.3 million iPods, a 19 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.”

Tim Cook said the company is very proud to end a fantastic fiscal year with record September quarter results. Apple is entering this holiday season with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod products ever, and remains very confident in our new product pipeline according to Cook.

Apple’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer commented: “We’re pleased to have generated over $41 billion in net income and over $50 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2012. Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2013, we expect revenue of about $52 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $11.75.”

With an aggressive roll-out pace - new iPods, new iPhone, new iPads - one Mini, one larger - new MacBook Pro and new iMacs in the last six weeks, analysts believe Apple has settled into a rapid, but not insane, rate of growth. While retaining the position in tablets and growing the Mac, Apple seem to still be taking all the market in smartphones that they want. So regardless the criticism from competitors, iPhone 5 appears to be a huge success for the company!

First "Samsung Didn't Copy iPad" Notice By Apple Appears In The UK

As a result of the U.K. court ruling, Apple has made the first notice of "Samsung didn't copy iPad" – forced by the verdict. Written in Arial, the notice is somewhat long and covers patents rather than devices. Written in a highly formal way, it’s obvious that the note is crafted by Apple's lawyers. The German court ruling, which did find Samsung violated Apple's design, and a, billion dollar win over Samsung in U.S courts is also mentioned in the notice.

Not being sure on how long the notice will remain live at, here’s the complete text:

Samsung / Apple UK judgment

On 9th July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited’s Galaxy Tablet Computer, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple’s registered design No. 0000181607-0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High court is available on the following link

In the ruling, the judge made several important points comparing the designs of the Apple and Samsung products:

"The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and a blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design."

"The informed user's overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool."

That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal’s judgment is available on the following link There is no injunction in respect of the registered design in force anywhere in Europe.

However, in a case tried in Germany regarding the same patent, the court found that Samsung engaged in unfair competition by copying the iPad design. A U.S. jury also found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's design and utility patents, awarding over one billion U.S. dollars in damages to Apple Inc. So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognized that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple's far more popular iPad.

What To Expect From iOS 6.0.1

With the recent reports claiming the first update to the latest version of Apple’s mobile OS is in a testing stage, the huge audience expects the upgrade sometime after the holiday season. Considering the fact that 2 out of five major iPhone 5 problems are caused by the iOS 6, the expectations for the upgrade are getting greater day by day.

The most desirable improvement would definitely be the augmented iOS Maps that have disappointed many users. With Tim Cook acknowledging the issue and apologizing for the low quality the Maps deliver, it is quite likely that Apple will at least a bit improve the existing version of iOS Maps.

With many users whining about the cellular data problems (of not been functional in some cases), iOS 6.0.1 update is expected to solve the issue, as well as bring the following reported bug fixes:

Improved Wi-Fi support;
Camera flash sometimes not going off when photos are taken;
Fix for horizontal lines appearing on the keyboard;
A bug with Microsoft Exchanges meetings getting canceled;
A bug affecting cellular data, and cellular data used with iTunes Match;
A Passbook security via the lockscreen issue.

If we consider the iOS 5 story, it’s quite likely that we’ll see this update be released shortly – as Apple rolled out the first bug fix update to its previous OS version just under a month. Have you experienced any other glitch with iOS 6 that we missed to mention in the list above? Do not hesitate to share your experience in the comments below.

iPhone Dominates AT&T Smartphone Sales For Q3 2012

According to the financial results for the third quarter of 2012 announced by AT&T Today, 4.7 million iPhones have been activated during the quarter. This indicates a one million increase over the previous quarter. The sales lift near the end of the period is said to be due the iPhone 5 launch.

AT&T avoided breaking down iPhone 5 sales numbers. However, it was remarked that the overall postpaid sales numbers were strongly affected by "inventory constraints" of the latest iPhone, as Apple has struggled to keep up with huge and ever-increasing demand.

Outstandingly, the 4.7 million iPhone activations signified approximately 77% of AT&T's total smartphone sales of 6.1 million throughout the quarter, displaying that Apple remains the leader in AT&T's smartphone customer base. With the overall smartphone rise to account for 81% of AT&T's sales on a postpaid basis, iPhone embodied 62% of AT&T's sales of both smart and feature phones to those customers. Here’s the extract from AT&T CEO Randal Stephenson comment:

“We had another impressive quarter with strong earnings growth, record cash flows and solid returns to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks. In wireless, we had another excellent smartphone quarter, penetration of usage-based mobile data plans continues to climb, and our 4G LTE network build is ahead of schedule. And in wire line, our IP network continues to deliver strong gains in U-verse high speed Internet connections, which helped drive an almost 10 percent increase in broadband data ARPU.

Our strong performance allows us to increase our free cash flow guidance to $18 billion or higher this year, exceeding our previous outlook by $2 billion.”

Despite success with iPhone, AT&T also had its best-ever sales quarter for Android and Windows smartphones.

The thinner and lighter version of the iPad is designed the way it fits in one hand comfortably, and features stunning 7.9-inch Multi-Touch display. Other features include FaceTime HD and iSight cameras, ultrafast wireless performance, and 10 hours of battery life.

However, the fourth-generation iPad announcement also made at yesterday’s event in California Theatre was a bit unexpected. iPad 4 features a 9.7-inch Retina display, new Apple-designed A6X chip, ultrafast wireless, and the new Lightning connector.

Both iterations of the iPad will be available for pre-order at the Apple Online Store on October 26 and will hit the retail stores a bit later, on November 2, starting at 8:00 a.m. As for the price tags, iPad 4 starts at $499, while iPad mini with Wi-Fi starts at $329.

iPad Mini Is Coming – Apple Store Down Again, Apple Events Channel Added To Apple TV!

As it usually happens before the new product launch – Apple Online Store is down right now, with the notice saying they’re busy updating the store and will be back soon! This does hint that despite the updated iOS 6 versions we’ve discussed in our previous post, and along with the Apple’s role in education, the Fruit Company will definitely unveil the Mini version of its best-selling tablet –iPad!

For those who own an Apple TV, there’s one more good news: Apple has silently added a new "Apple Events" app to the standard Apple TV home page and is set to stream today's media event live! So far this is the only way to watch the iPad Mini Keynote live. The company does not usually offer live video streaming for its media event – last time Apple did so was way back in 2010. However, streaming the event to the Apple TV is definitely a nice way to bring the event to the many eager viewers who are unable to attend the event in person. Stay tuned - we’ll cover the whole media event as soon as the pending details get clearer!

Samsung To Terminate Contract With Apple – Will No Longer Provide LCD Panels?!

According to industry sources, Samsung Display plans to terminate its contract with Apple. This means that the Korean company will no longer supply liquid crystal display panels to its longtime partner and therefore, the major competitor. The sources speculate about the rift between the two companies, which had shared a strong partnership in electronic components.

Samsung’s decision to cut its years-long business ties with Apple is driven by the fact that Fruit Company is no longer a cash-generator due to its inflexible supply-chain management structure.

The extract from the report by KoreanTimes reads:

“The Cupertino, California-based firm has been lowering its reliance on Samsung-manufactured displays for use in its popular i-branded devices as it is leveraging its influence to source components from Samsung’s rivals attracted by better pricing.

“We are unable to supply our flat-screens to Apple with huge price discounts. Samsung has already cut our portion of shipments to Apple and next year we will stop shipping displays,” said one senior industry official, asking not to be named, Monday. “

Rendering several sources contacted by The Korea Times, Amazon and Samsung Electronics’ handset division are both increasing their orders for tablet displays. This probably is a sufficient substitute for possible losses, caused by cutting the relationship with Apple.

According to the DisplaySearch, a market research company, Samsung Display has shipped over 15 million LCDs, while its biggest rival LG Display only 12.5 million, followed by Japan’s Sharp with 2.8 million. So Samsung Display has been the top supplier to Apple as of the end of the first six months of this year.

What To Expect From Apple’s October 23rd Event – iPad Mini Rumor Roundup

As we've already reported, Apple has sent out invitations to is October 23rd media event held in California Theatre in San Jose. With the invitation reading “ We've got a little more to show you”; Apple’s widely expected to introduce a mini version of its successful tablet in 24 different colors, memory and spec variants.

The good news is that Apple's online store now suggests "iPad mini" as a possible search result, along with "iPad air, "iPad nano”, "iPad little" and more. With Search results from being accurate previously in case of iPhone 5, so we should fairly expect new iterations iPad to arrive at the event tomorrow.

As for the rest of the rumors, some pricing information for the upcoming device has been leaked, suggesting the starting price tag to hit $329 (though at what storage capacity is uncertain). So being uncertain, non-credible and telling almost nothing, we pass on this one.

The rumors and reports suggest that he iPad Mini will be just a refresh of the existing iPad, but with the added support of Lighting connector introduces with iPhone 5. The “refreshed” new iPad may also get a more optimized processor, a more efficient display, a larger battery and perhaps the support for global LTE much like the iPhone 5 as well.

With the rumors being out of control, as it always is before a new product launch by Apple, we still cannot confirm any of the statements above. Stay tuned, as more details seem to be pending about the upcoming device. We’ll cover the whole iPad mini event as usual, but before then, do not hesitate to express your opinion about what’s on the way in the comments below.

Apple’s Latest Acquisitions – Particle And Color Labs

The recent reports claim that Apple has made two major acquisitions this week – the Cupertino company has reportedly bought troubled startup - Color Labs for somewhere in the double-digit millions as well as acquired Particle, a firm specializing in the design of HTML5 websites and web apps, with the price tag kept secret.

The Particle is a company that has focused predominantly on user experience in the past. The incomplete list of its partners include: Google, Amazon, and Motorola. Despite specializing in HTML 5 website design, Particle is also behind video sharing service Some speculate that Apple’s acquisition may hint Cupertino Company shifting focus on HTML5 on its product pages iAd advertising, and on, serving as the only place Apple has true Web apps. Other options of Particle’s new functions include revoking and making iCloud web apps faster and more responsive, working on iTunes to improve the overall store experience or perhaps improving search. There are some other versions as well, but they seem less realistic.

As for the second acquisition – there’s a quite interesting story. The founder of Color Labs - Bill Nguyen- has already sold one more company to Apple previously – called Lala. With no clearly identified mission, Color Labs is believed to be acquired just for the patents it holds. Reports suggest that Color patents include one for a file format that they were working on to record HD video and six patents pending at the time of its funding, including its ‘elastic’ social graph and patents related to GPS location and battery saving. However, others suggest Apple was so impressed by the software engineering team of Color that decided to purchase the whole company…

With no official response of Apple about its intentions with the two recently acquired companies, all we’ve left to do is to see what’ll be changed from now. Till then, do not hesitate to express your predictions in the comments below.

More iPhone 5 Tricks For Your Convenience

We've already shared several iPhone 5 tips and continue providing additional tricks for you to make the best use of your new device. Below you’ll find some simple instructions that’ll make your iPhone experience even more convenience.

Let’s start with the most problematic one – Maps feature. With much criticism the service “deserved”, Apple promised to improve its own maps. However, till the Cupertino Company keeps promise, you can make using Maps more convenient by navigating to Settings > Maps and altering the size of the label to small. This will allow you see more street names on the screen without the need to zoom in. Moreover, the layout is made tidier and despite the smaller text, iPhone 5 4” retina display makes it look wonderful.

Enable/Disable Raise to Speak Siri – if you don’t like your dialog with Siri to be heard, navigate to Settings > General > Siri and enable "Raise to Speak." Once turned on, Siri will start listening when you hold the phone up to your ear when the screen is on. Siri will respond your queries through the iPhone's earpiece instead of the external speakers, as it usually did.

And the last one for now- about keeping your photos backed up without plugging in. With several ways to make backups on you iPhone (not necessarily the iPhone 5), this one is easiest – with no need to go through iTunes. Apple has built-in a solution for keeping your photos backed up – called Apple's Photo Stream, making makes your last 30 days' worth of photos available on almost any device. All you need to do is to navigate to Settings > > Photos & Camera and turn the Photo Stream on. After that, your photos will automatically show up on your other iOS devices and Macs. As for PC owners, they’ll need to download Apple's iCloud Control Panel, which creates a Photo Stream folder under "Favorites" in Windows Explorer.

iPhone 5 Named To Be The Most Difficult Device That Foxconn Has Ever Assembled

Amazing the customers since its very release with the thinness and lightness, iPhone 5 has broken the record of the fastest selling Apple’s device. Along with the huge demand, there’s also been supply shortage, causing fallen sales.

iPhone 5 is being assembled in Zhengzhou plant of the Foxconn Technology Group located in central China and in southern China in Guan Lan. The reasons behind the supply shortages have been clarified by an unnamed official of the factory. He admitted that the company’s workforce had been having difficulties with assembling Apple’s flagship device by saying:

“The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled.  To make it light and thin, the design is very complicated. It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day.”

The previously spread rumor about the conflict between assembly line workers and quality inspectors in Zhengzhou has also been confirmed by the unnamed source, caused by some quality issues” he didn't elaborate. The official added that the Zhengzhou plant is just about one year old and thus, the executives are “still learning how to manage the work force there”.

The executive says to have taken measures for productivity improvement and for eliminating scratches on the metal casings of some new iPhones that were shipped. Noting that a new coating material of the iPhone 5 makes it more susceptible to scratching, he said: “It’s always hard to satisfy both aesthetic needs and practical needs.”

The thing to note is that according to the widely shared speculations, the backplate for the iPad Mini announced to arrive in less than a week will be same material is the iPhone 5, so it’ll be quite interesting to see if the manufacturers will experience the same problems with the much-awaited tablet as well.

Apple Sends Out iPad Mini Event Invitations, Plans To Introduce As Many As 24 New Versions Of The Tablet

Apple has just started sending out invites to hand-picked media representatives for their forthcoming special event on October 23rd, widely believed to be concentrated on the rumored iPad Mini and Macs. The event is scheduled to take place at 10:00 am PT, as usual, but the location has changed- instead of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, the media event will be held at the California Theatre in San Jose.

"We've got a little more to show you"- read the invitations, hinting that it’s quite possible the company will introduce a “little” version of the iPad, and perhaps an updated iPad 3 with Lightning cable and international LTE. Moreover, we may also see the final version of iTunes 11, and perhaps a bump to iOS 6 to support the new devices.

With the event being less than a week away, a product list has leaked, suggesting that Apple may launch as many as 24 iPad models! The differences between the numbers of iPads will be in storage, color, and radio variants, which is fairly typical for any new Apple product. The report reads:

“With the three storage capacities, four models, and lastly two colors denoted by “A” and “B” (likely black and white), Apple will launch 24 new iPad models. Apple will also be selling 10 packs of iPad Minis to education for a discount, according to the SKUs.”

So, with no official confirmation of what the new iPads and Macs will look like, all we’ve left to do is to keep calm and wait for October 23rd!

How To Unlock iOS 6 On iPhone 4 And 3GS

For those unaware- unlock is a method allowing any SIM to be used on a smartphone – bypassing restrictions usually beset by a carrier. Majority of iPhone enthusiasts strive to have their devices non-dependent on the carrier operators, who usually offer a way for older smartphones to be unlocked.

However, there’s an unlock solution for your iPhone 4 and 3GS running latest version of Apple’s mobile OS as well, available via the well-known jailbreak utility called Ultrasn0w Fixer, updated for iOS 6. However the Ultrasn0w Fixer for iOS 6 supports certain basebands, including:

Despite the official Ultrasn0w being weeks away, this Fixer will not let you down till then. However, make sure your iOS 6 device is jailbroken of course with preserved baseband before getting started.

So here’s the deal – open Cydia, navigate to Manage > Sources and add iparelhos repository by selecting Edit and add and typing the following link type - before hitting Add Source. Those organized users who re-added their sources from iOS 5 should omit this step.

You’ll now need to download the latest official iteration of Ultrasn0w from Cydia, but please make sure you install the official Ultrasn0w first BEFORE installing the Fixer, otherwise it will not be fully functional. So now you’re a step away from having an unlocked phone – just browse for Ultrasn0w Fixer for 6.0 utility in Cydia, tap the Install button and let Cydia work its magic!

That’s it! Do not forget to come back and share your unlocking experiences in the comments below!

iPhone 5 Demand Breaks Records Regardless Problems With Maps And Lightning

The recent research conducted by 451/ChangeWave reveals that neither Maps  nor the new Lightning connector or other problems of iPhone 5 have dampened enthusiasm for the device - there’s more demand for Cupertino’s latest smartphone than for any previous editions! The survey canvassed 4,270 North American consumers, 32% of which said that they were likely to buy an iPhone 5 as their next smartphone — within that 19% said ‘very likely’ and 13% ‘somewhat likely. The “very likely” alternative has gone almost double in comparison with Apple’s previous iPhone 4S.

Here’s what Dr. Paul Carton, ChangeWave's vice president of Research, commented: "Despite the media attention surrounding both the Apple Maps issue and the Apple Lightning port issue, neither has had an impact on the massive numbers of buyers queuing up to buy the iPhone 5. Rather, the survey results show both issues hardly rank as bumps in the road.”

The same report also aimed to find out if respondents running iOS 6 had experienced problems with Apple Maps, and it appears that the new mapping software has not been a major issue for users as 90% of those polled reported “no problem at all," while 3% said iOS 6 Maps are a "very big problem". 6% said the issue is "somewhat of a problem." So it seems that competitors do contribute for such a negative reputation of Apple Maps a lot. Moreover, nearly a third of respondents - 31% — said the change to the Lightning port is "not much of a problem," while 26% said it's "no problem at all”! Despite more than two-thirds of respondents expressing concerns over the Lightning port, the research found it will not stop consumers from buying the latest smartphone by Apple.

The success of iPhone 5 was obvious even before its official introduction – experts believed the device would dominate the market. And it’s been even bigger success after the launch - 2 million units have been pre-ordered in the first 24 hours, and Apple announced the device sold 5 million units in its first three days of availability!
