Apple Store Records Over 3 Times More Revenue Than Google Play

The service in charge of tracking revenue and growth for both the App Store and Google Play has just unveiled the index of January 2013. While the both stores are suggested to be doing pretty well, the Apple App Store managed to generate over 3.5 times more than Google Play! On the other hand, the app store for Android saw more growth than the App Store.

With 700,000 apps now available to consumers in Google Play, Apple App store beats its competitor and is proud of its 800,000.

According to Bloomberg, “App Annie (The service in charge of tracking revenue and growth for both the App Store and Google Play) wouldn’t disclose specific revenue figures because it sells that information separately to software companies that buy the data and analytics. While Apple has said the App Store has generated more than $7 billion since 2008, Google hasn't made such information public. Apple has more than 800,000 apps on its store, and Google has more than 700,000.”

The average sum reported by Apple per month since June to December is $333 million on average, which is approximately 3 times more than Google Play managed to record. The increase in sales for Apple has been around 20% between October and December – fairly attributed to the release of the popular iPhone 5 and iPad mini. However, Google Play has increased 6 times its size prior to 2012, despite its competitor having recorded much higher revenues.

How To Update To iOS 6.1 On iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch OTA

Apple has just made iOS 6.1 available to the public, including the ability to buy movie tickets with Siri, better LTE support, and more. Apple allows us to update our iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches over-the-air instead of having to plug into iTunes since the introduction of iOS 5, so your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch should normally alert you when an update for your device is ready. However, if it doesn’t, here’s how to manually trigger the over-the-air update yourself.

Before rushing to the steps listed below, please note that Apple requires your battery to be at 50% or better in order to install a software update over-the-air without being plugged into a charger. Also, make sure that you have your iCloud password on hand, as this update is a bit different from previous ones and requires  iCloud authorization upon completing the update.

If you satisfy these two requirements mentioned above, you can now proceed further and launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Navigate to General - Software update and check to see if there's an update available on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

The device will then should display the option to Download and Install or Install Now, if it’s already downloaded the software. Tap on it and you’ll be prompted to plug your device in to save battery, tap continue and let your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch do its thing.

Once the update process is complete, the device will reboot and you’ll then now be on the latest software version!

Check The Updated iOS 7 Notification Center Concept

After a few announcements with slight user interface alterations, it is reasonable that Apple may be in works on fairly a lot of changes for its forthcoming release of iOS 7. Now when it’s several months since iOS 6 release and the first major update – iOS 6.1 is around the corner, the next iOS version is what we are all wondering about.

Well known for creating other concepts in the past, a designer dubbed as BlogB13 has put together a follow-up video of what he supposes the Notification Center in the upcoming iOS 7 may look like.

Depicting an updated Notification Center with a much cleaner UI, the video breakdowns all of the notifications into icons: tapping on these icons will bring up all of the notifications related with a specific app, from where the list of possible actions is offered, including texting and giving a call.

The video also portrays third-party widgets, which have been extensively expected in iOS. Since the iOS 5 launch, when we saw the first iteration of Notification Center, Apple has shipped a few built-in widgets, such as Weather and Stocks, none of the developers have been given the right to create their own widgets. However, this concept demonstrates Twitter and Instagram widgets with iOS 7 functioning perfectly; giving us a bit of hope that Apple will someday allow third-party widgets in its upcoming iOS versions.

With Apple historically introducing the improvements to its iOS at WWDC, taking place in June this year, it seems we won’t encounter much official data till then. So before the formal introduction, we’re free to speculate as much as we wish. Check the video concept provided below and do not hesitate to voice up in the comments!

Make Free Voice Calls Via Facebook Messenger For iPhone

Earlier this month Facebook has started testing free calling over Wi-Fi and cellular data for all Messenger for iPhone users in Canada. With the promise that the service in the US would launch soon, it seems the test passed well- a new free calling button has just appeared in the app!

World’s largest social network has confirmed that the feature began rolling out to US users today, and there is no need for updating the app through the App Store. What you need to make a call to other Facebook user is to open a conversation with that person, tap the "i" button in the top-right corner, and select Free Call option. This means that users living in the US can now call other Facebook users for free over Wi-Fi or using your phone's data connection while you're on the go. When on a call, a push notification appears on their screen that says who is calling. This new feature is of a critical importance for those having poor cell service at work or at home, and for those who want to conserve cell phone minutes.

The call quality sounds have been confirmed to be quite good, and will certainly make the competition tougher for Vonage, Viber and Skype – have been offering the feature for some time now.

Having had a partnership with Skype for video calling inside Facebook's website since summer 2011, what Facebook Messenger still notably lacks is a video calling feature. However, no details are revealed and there’s no further information about an international rollout of this very useful feature through its Messenger for Android app, or VoIP calling through its website. Stay positive, as we do hope these things are to come soon as well!

Plastic Chassis Suggested For The Rumored Entry-Level iPhone

The buzz about Apple working on the production of a low-priced entry level iPhone for developing marketplaces is still present and timely. A recent report by DigiTimes, posted this morning, suggests that the low end design may adopt plastic instead of the high quality materials used in typical iPhone model. The rumors still seems to be rational, as in order to make up somewhere along the line, Apple would definitely have to save some money.

The extract from today’s report reads: “Apple's rumored entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic for its chassis instead of reinforced glass or unibody metal as in the company's standard iPhone models, to save cost, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. However, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) declined to comment on its clients or orders when asked about the report.”

On top of the part rumors, it’s also suggested that the actual low end iPhone chassis will be manufactured by a US-based electronic producing service provider and that it will consist of metal and plastic. It may even have a see through body pretensioning the internal parts from the outside.

All these speculations have stemmed from the supposed change in Apple component supply chain, and traditionally, they all should be taken with a grain of salt, based on our previous experience.

Apple Honored With Technology and Engineering Emmy Award

Apple has just been given a Technology and Engineering Emmy award at a special party in The Bellagio, Bellagio Ballroom, Las Vegas at a special CES event. The honor awarded to Apple, was for the “Eco-system for Real Time Presentation of TV Content to Mobile Devices without the use of Specialized Television Hardware”. While sounding impressive, the official reason seems a bit unclear, with no one exactly knowing what it really means. However, it’s widely assumed that the award has something to do with iTunes and iCloud, more concretely with Apple’s music, movie and video sale and distribution system utilizing.

The Technology and Engineering Emmy® Awards was launched back in 1948 and honor development and innovation in broadcast technology and recognize companies for their breakthroughs in tech world and significant effect on television engineering. Officially, here’s what the awards are given for:

“Awards are presented to an individual, company, or to a scientific or technical organization for developments and/or standardization involved in engineering technologies which either represent an extensive improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially have affected the transmission, recording, or reception of television.”

Despite being a bit unclear, the award does bring more appreciation and respect of how Apple has made the system of watching movies and TV shows so much easier. So congrats Apple, and keep on!

Tim Cook Held Meeting With China Mobile Chairman

Reports suggest that Tim Cook, Apple CEO had a meeting with China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua this week in Beijing. Despite the scarce details, it’s widely believed that the discussion was about what a China Mobile spokesman called "matters of cooperation." The two parties are believed to have signed a confidentiality agreement, which would give Apple access to 700 million more subscribers with a huge smartphone market ready to catch fire.

An extract from the report reads: “A long-anticipated agreement between the two giants could jumpstart smartphone adoption in China and will earn both companies untold sums.”

During his tour in China, Cook has visited Apple Stores and official resellers all over the country, held several meetings with government officials to discuss technology procedures, and visited current companions, including China Mobile's smaller rival China Unicom.

According to a survey conducted by research firm IDC in December, right before the iPhone 5's launch in China, Apple’s share of China's smartphone market has fallen from fourth to sixth position, after Samsung, Lenovo, Coolpad, ZTE, and Huawei.

With smartphones still being just a small fraction of China's total wireless market, access to all three networks operating in the country would definitely improve Apple's stance. This may rationally be considered to be the reason why Cook allegedly assumed that Apple intends to expand its retail presence in China by increasing its official store number nationwide from 11 to 25.

Apple Potentially Working On A Cheaper iPhone

It seems rumors about Apple plans are never going to calm down. Once again the speculations surfaced recently suggest that Apple could be working on a cheaper iPhone. The device is expected to become available as early as the end of current year.

As usual, unidentified “sources familiar with the matter” claim that Apple had been thinking of the cheaper smartphone in the past as well, but the idea of an iPhone with a cheaper build production has become progressive just now.

The rumored iPhone may look like the standard iPhone in overall, but will come with a different, less-expensive body.

“The cheaper phone could resemble the standard iPhone, with a different, less-expensive body, one of the people said. One possibility Apple has considered is lowering the cost of the device by using a different shell made of polycarbonate plastic; in contrast, the iPhone 5 currently has aluminum housing. Many other parts could remain the same or be recycled from older iPhone models.” – reports WSJ, claiming that a less expensive iPhone model could potentially have a cheaper polycarbonate body and recycled or refurbished iPhone parts in order to lower the entry cost.

There’s a possibility that the cost of the next iPhone will be lowered by compromising the shell of the device – it’ll be made of polycarbonate plastic instead of the aluminum housing iPhone 5 features. As for the other parts, they may stay same or be recycled from older iPhone models.

The fact that we’ve got a cheaper iPad variant in the form of the iPad Mini to gain more market share in tablets, it seems quite rational that Apple may decide to expand its power over smartphone market as well. What are your thoughts? Do not hesitate to voce up in the comments below.
