iOS 6.1.3 Jailbreak No Longer Available With Evasi0n

Recent reports suggest that Apple is working to finally come through with an iOS release to patch the various exploits which allow Evasi0n to work its magic. The  iOS 6.1.3 beta 2, which released a couple of days back, patches at least one of the bugs exploited by the Evasi0n jailbreak and likely spells the end of the Evasi0n jailbreak for devices pre-installed with iOS 6.1.3, while those on iOS 6 will need to refrain from updating their software.

While some tests are still running currently, it’s been reported that the patched vulnerability pertains to the Time Zone settings and the chain reaction of having one exploit patched will have devastating effects on the Evasi0n jailbreak.

Forbes’ Andy Greenberg, David Wang – better known to us as jailbreak maestro Planetbeing states:

“If one of the vulnerabilities doesn’t work, evasi0n doesn’t work. . . We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we’ve used when 6.1.3 comes out.”

Since the Evasi0n v1.0 release, several million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices having been jailbroken. And now before we begin lamenting the demise of the tool it could be up to a month before such an update is released. By then, the only recommendation is not to perform any kind of update on your device on any upcoming iOS release until it’s deemed safe to do so.

Apple, regardless its lack of urgency in issuing a patch, still refutes idea of jailbreaking, so once you do update your software on the latest public version, there is currently no way of reverting back on any of the newer devices.

How To Fix “Cannot Connect Error” For App Store Or iTunes In iOS 6 (iPhone/iPad)

If you have been getting the frustrating error - “Cannot connect to iTunes Store”, then you are not alone. The error has been seen in devices which has upgraded to iOS 6 or above. I have tried restoring my device multiple times and it did not fix the issue either. Fortunately, I did find a solution in the support forums of Apple and hope to detail the steps below so that you can also fix the error on your iPhone or iPad.

The Quick Fix

Step 1 - Go to Settings

Step 2 - Turn off automatic time and date settings by going into General > Date and Time > Set Automatically > Off.

Step 3 - Change date in your device to one year ahead and try updating your apps. If the issue is not solved, then try to change the automatic date and time to ON and try again. This will probably solve your issue of iTunes Store connectivity for the iTunes app, the App Store as well as Passbook-compatible apps.

You can also see that the rows in the bottom of the app store change their order to add the “Charts” and “Genius” instead of the “Categories” section previously.

I hope this quick fix will be helpful to your iPhone or iPad frustrations! Do sound off in the comments if this worked for you or if you found another way to fix the problem.

iOS 6.1.2 Out, Evasi0n Jailbreak Still Valid

Apple has just started rolling out its promised second minor point update - iOS 6.1.2, addressing minor network activity-related problems for Exchange calendar users. There is no information whether iOS 6.1.2 fixes a passcode bypass bug, which has been highly-publicized and considered to be extremely dangerous in privacy terms.

According to the most recent reports the evasi0n jailbreak tool appears to still be working under iOS 6.1.2, at last iPad mini Wi-Fi and iPhone 5 are confirmed to still be jailbreakable. Even though the two iDevices are confirmed to be up and working well with evasi0n, this does not mean you should update to iOS 6.1.2 right now, unless you're willing to lose your jailbreak for the time being, as it still needs further testing before the evad3rs can release an update to support the firmware.

For those who own jailbroken devices, it is hardly recommended to wait for evasi0n to be thoroughly tested and updated. Also, it is important to note that you must do a restore and update through iTunes and not use the over-the-air (OTA) software update feature to update to iOS 6.1.2, as, regardless the simplicity, it may cause issues while attempting to jailbreak your device.

iPhone 6 With 4.8" Screen About To Enter Production

Recent reports indicate that the iPhone 6 is preparing to enter production, ahead its suggested launch date in June. The new flow of rumors has started floating recently, mentioning a phablet-sized iPhone, which is already confirmed to be the next iteration of Apple’s iPhone.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek states that Apple is at present undertaking trials of the next model of the iPhone and the legendary iPhone Mini, apparently in the surroundings of its Cupertino Campus. Both devices are suggested to enter the production process in March. The analyst also verified tenacious speculations that the iPhone 6, also casually dubbed the iPhone 5S, will feature to a 4.8-inch display, up from the four-inch display that debuted on the iPhone 5.

The same is being suggested by an unconnected report from the China Times, also stating that Apple will go in the fast-growing phablet market this year with an iDevice that teams smartphone functionality with scopes that approach on tablet area.

Peter Misek also reverses estimation that the phone will be armed with a super HD camera, Near Field Communications tools to up the handset’s identifications as a digital wallet, enhanced battery life and 128GB of storage. Additionally, it is also suggested that Apple will introduce its seventh generation device in a range of color options, including green, yellow, blue, purple, silver, red and slate.

With nothing being confirmed officially yet, we suggest you take these rumors with a grain of salt- Apple’s so unpredictable that neither of this may appear to be true.

Apple To Fix Passcode Bypass And Several Other Issues In iOS 6.1.2 Update

An official maintenance update is expected to be released for public consumption before month’s end; bringing fixes for the heavily discussed battery-draining Exchange bug and the potentially dangerous Lock screen vulnerability that lets anyone bypass your passcode.

These improvements are expected to arrive as arrive as part of iOS 6.1.2 update, which is about to come, according to a German blog with quite accurate record of Apple reporting.

The report available in German claims that fixes for the above-mentioned vulnerabilities are part of the iOS 6.1.2 and will become available for Wednesday, February 20. The blog cites the same sources for providing the information, who predicted the launch of iOS 6.1.1 previously.

We have mentioned the trick spread recently, allowing anyone to bypass the lock screen of an iPhone and gain access to contacs, apps, messages, e-mails and other private data. Here’s how it can be done:

Apple has acknowledged the issue, concerning which the company spokeswoman Trudy Muller said:

“We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.”

Moreover, Microsoft and Apple have also offered the fixes for a horrible Exchange bug in iOS 6.1.1, killing battery life much faster than usual. According to the same German blog, this issue will also be addressed in the upcoming iOS 6.1.2 which is around the corner.

Warning - iOS 6 Allowing Passcode Bypass!

Here’s a security alert to all the users who run iOS 6 on their iPhones- a way has been found to bypass the iPhone's Lock screen passcode once more, thus this involves a complicated series of button pushes and screen taps to basically put the system into apoplexy. However, as long as it is confirmed, no matter how complex the process is, you should be aware not to become a victim of losing some important data.
Here’s what the Jailbreak Nation reports:

“Today, we discovered a method to bypass the passcode lock on any iPhone running the newest software update iOS 6.1. The method is a bit complicated and will allow access to the phone application. While hitting the home button will re lock the phone, the exploit does have potential to snoop through peoples contacts and make calls.”

It's not the first time defenselessness in the iPhone's Lock screen passcode has been discovered. Apple is likely to fix this vulnerability bug in their next update, as it has done in case of similar bypasses before. However it is important not to forget that bypassing your passcode requires physical access to your iPhone, so the first tip for your secure smartphone usage is not to leave your device without attention, or never hand it to anyone for long, who may use your data for own cruel intentions.

Apple – Japan’s Number One Phone Manufacturer

The recent market surveys have revealed that Apple has become the number one and thus top selling phone manufacturer in Japan! Allowing Apple to gain the whole 15% of the country’s smartphone market share, iPhone has been the best-selling phone in Japan throughout 2012, putting them ahead two Japanese firms - Sharp and Fujitsu, both holding 14% share of the market. The Counterpoint Technology Market Research points out that the huge increase of iPhone sales in the country are caused by the heavy marketing effort by Japan’s second- and third-largest carriers - KDDI and Softbank:

“In 2012 both Softbank and KDDI heavily promoted the new iPhone 5 to challenge Docomo. This move sparked a battle of smartphones in which Docomo fought back with various new smartphone models, the majority of which were also foreign branded. So yet again it’s operator competition that has catalyzed the iPhone’s success – but in Japan at the expense of home grown players.” However, we think that this may be due to adding Japanese language support to Siri as well.

Generally, the handsets manufactured outside Japan controlled 50% of the country’s phone market in 2012, as the users started gradually shifting from simple feature phones to smartphones. The share of Japanese-made phones has significantly decreased against the iPhone. Smartphone usage is progressively growing in Japan and so does the probability of iPhone being chosen by the customers. While the situation is not the same for the US, it is still quite a significant achievement for Apple to hold such a massive market portion in Japan.

Inexpensive iPhone Not Planned – Tim Cook Speaks Up In San Francisco

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday that Apple will not create a new, inexpensive iPhone just for the sake of offering a cheaper alternative. With the focus of the company being on creating great products, Apple will not make a smartphone that does not past the quality test – that’s what Tim Cook announced during a webcast from the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference, held in San Francisco.

"We are making moves to make things more affordable. When we came out with iPod it was $399, today you can buy an iPod Shuffle for $49. Instead of saying how can we cheapen this iPod to get it lower, we said how can we do a great product, and we were able to do that. The same thing, but in a different concept in some ways. That said, if you look at what we've done to appeal to people who are more price sensitive, we lowered the price for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and in the December quarter, we didn't have enough supply of iPhone 4, so it surprised us as to the level of demand we had for it. There are other companies that do that, that's not who we are," Tim Cook said. "Our North Star is great products."

Decreasing the price on older iDevice models is just one of the attitudes Apple is taking to reach out to price-sensitive consumers. It's not easy to balance quality and price, and that's when novelty comes into action and new products could be created to meet the demand, he added.

Apple CEO also mentioned the potential of its company to grow in the smartphone market, and mentioned that the market share of the Cupertino Company has not flattened in the wake of increased competition. With the smartphone market being about 700 million units and being projected to double in a few years, iPhone is available to only 50 percent of subscribers, so it has a huge market to tap into.

Cook also reported that the 500 million iPhones shipped from 2007 to the end of last year, with 40 percent of the iPhones shipping in the last year, and 47.8 million shipping in the last fiscal quarter. Cook added that his company will not deviate from the route of acquiring companies as it builds products, however with the extreme attention when choosing the larger ones - "we have looked at large companies. In each case we have done that thus far, it didn't pass our test," he said, "we will do more [acquisitions], we are constantly looking in the market. Cash is not burning a hole in our pocket."

iWatch Being Tested By Apple And Foxconn

Back in the rumor mill recently, Apple iWatch is being heavily discussed; suggested to be tested by Apple and Foxconn. An extract from the NYT recent report reads:

“In its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company’s explorations, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Such a watch would operate Apple’s iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company’s understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body.”

Jessica E. Lessin, reporting for the WSJ adds:

“Apple Inc. is experimenting with designs for a watch-like device that would perform some functions of a smartphone, according to people briefed on the effort. The company has discussed such a device with its major manufacturing partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., one of these people said, as part of explorations of potentially large product categories beyond the smartphone and tablet.”

The features of a rumored iOS device that you’d strap around your wrist are suggested to include mobile payments, proximity logins, notification projection, Siri integration and many more. If the reports quoted above are to be believed, the device is somewhat quite likely to be true.

As usual, several mock-up designs are suggested by various artists, each claiming their version of the iWatch to be closer to the truth. We provide all of them below, leaving it up to you to decide which one is better. Do not hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments.

iPhone 5S And 5-Inch iPhone 6 To Launch In 2013

A recent report from the Chinese media claims that Apple will be launching both an iPhone 5S and a 5" iPhone 6 both during this year. The translated version of the report reads:

“A source told Chinese mobile phone information site that he has seen the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 at Apple's suppliers. Both models may be released in 2013, according to the website's microblog on Thursday evening.

- The source noted that the iPhone 5S resembles the iPhone 5, and the five-inch iPhone 6 is lighter and thinner.”

In addition to the previous speculations that suggest Apple is seriously considering a larger form-factor iPhone in the near future, this report just makes the statement more credible. However the early reports suggested the larger iteration of iPhone wouldn't see the light of day in 2013, while the latest ones continue to point to a 4.8"-5.0" device coming sooner.

There have been numerous speculations on how such a larger model might make sense in Apple's iPhone lineup without compromising the quality of the existing apps, especially when comparing it to Samsung's current offerings.

Considering the fact that Apple has its entire manufacturingprocess shifted in China, these sightings appear to be credible, while the timing is still under question, as Apple may not be able to launch this much different device in 2013. So it seems we should expect the parts of this larger device to also begin to leak out of China, if Apple does actually begin ramping up production for 2013.

Apple Becomes Largest Mobile Phone Vendor In The U.S.

Apple has now officially become the market leader in mobile phones in the United States, according to the data collected by Strategy Analytics of the final quarter of 2012. However, Samsung still led for the rest of the annuity and respectively, for the year as a whole. This is the first time Apple manages to hold the top spot in overall mobile phone shipments. Moreover, the Korean Giant manufacturer had held the leading position since 2008 before being dethroned by Apple.

via MacRumors
With a total of an estimated 52 million mobile phones shipped in the U.S during the last quarter of 2012, Apple accounts for 17.7 million of them, followed by Samsung with 16.8 million and LG being a distant third with 4.7 million. Neil Mawston, Executive Director of Strategy Analytics commented:

“We estimate Apple shipped 17.7 million mobile phones for a record 34 percent share of the United States market in the fourth quarter of 2012. This was up sharply from 12.8 million units shipped and 25 percent share in Q4 2011. Apple has become the number one mobile phone vendor by volume in the United States for the first time ever. Apple’s success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model.”

Strategy Analytics believes that Samsung may retake and gain the top position back once the rumored flagship Galaxy S IV is launched. Meanwhile, Apple' has recently been rejected on its renewed attempt to ban sales of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus by The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Apple has been awarded an injunction which prohibited sales of the Nexus, while this was overturned in October and this is right this now exhausts Apple's appeal choices, making the latest judgment final.

What May Larger “iPhone Plus” Look Like

Amongst stories of a meaningfully larger iPhone release, some significant mock-ups of the possibly upcoming device have been developed according to the recent speculations. Considering the measures of iPhone 5, which are already quite large, the suggested mock-ups show that it is pretty possible that Apple achieves an iPhone with a nearly 5-inch display without compromising on the existing app ecosystem quality.

Often dubbed as an iPhone Math”, or more likely “iPhone Plus”, the larger-screened device is plausible as an additional mode, and not a replacement alongside the 4”-screened iPhone. With a fair chance that the device may have 4.94”, 16:9 screen, the Retina iPad-Mini screens with iPhone 5 resolution would quite successfully fit the device, if Apple keeps the rest of the design sized like an iPhone 5. The recent reports claim that “an 1136x640 screen matching the iPhone 5's resolution but blown up to the Retina iPad's 264 pixels-per-inch resolution would measure 4.94 inches diagonally.”

The “iPhone Plus” is suggested to maintain the same relative proportions as the iPhone 5, while the screen will measure somewhere between the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II – it’s two main Android competitors.

Check the suggested mock-ups after the jump, showing what Apple's larger-screen iPhone may look like, as well as the iPhone Plus compared with Galaxy Note phablet and the flagship S III. Do not hesitate to share your impressions in the comments below.
